The Young Men of Distinction Program focuses on developing young men along the following dimensions:


Academic Development

Our program teaches young men goal setting, career exploration, College Preparation, Study Skills through tutoring. Our program strengthens students and helps students academically.

Leadership Development

Our program develops young men leadership skills by engaging them in leadership conferences annually and through Entrepreneurial workshops. YMOD participants are also trained in the areas of public speaking and Political Consciousness.

Social Development

Our program engages the participants in diverse social settings. Participants are exposed to historical prospectives, etiquette training, current events, leisure activities and team building exercises.

Personal Development

Our program teaches communication skills, conflict resolution, sex education & responsibility, Self discipline, time management and health & hygiene. Participants engage in action and scenario learning.

Attention is given to these principles through participation in monthly educational modules, social activities, fundraisers, as well as community service. Program participants will also be eligible for scholarships to assist with future college expenses. click here to view YMOD Brochure


Following notification of the scholarship award, the recipient(s) selected must provide proof of enrollment at an accredited college or university during the Fall 2015 or Spring 2016 academic term prior to final disbursement funding of the award. In addition there may be other requirements that every recipient and their parents/guardian will be provided.


Applicants should:

1. Be a young man who will be graduating from one of the following schools:

a. Brainerd High School

b. Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences

c. Howard School of Academics and Technology

d. Tyner High School

2. Have a GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale

3. Submit an official high school transcript

4. Submit three letters of recommendation

5. Write and submit a 1-1/2 – 2 page essay entitled “Why I Deserve the Alpha Scholarship”. Tell us about your accomplishments, your life and career goals, your family, and anything else that will help us to know you better. Essays will be judged on presentation, content and writing skills. Please do not submit handwritten essays.

6. Submit a completed application (Please type or write legibly).

7. Be available for an interview with our Scholarship Committee.

Following notification of the scholarship award, the recipient(s) selected must provide proof of enrollment at an accredited college or university of the Fall and Spring academic school year post high school graduation . The scholarship award amount is $500 Fall semester and $500 Spring semester with the foundation approval of required enrollment documentation. Approved documentation for submission can be class schedule, enrollment statement or fee statement, which all documentation will have the university name and student’s name listed.  All documentation can be either:

It is the responsibility of the student, the parent(s) or guardian to submit this information within the same academic school year prior to final disbursement funding of the scholarship award.


The Psi Lambda Educational Foundation is a Tennessee Non-profit Corporation with 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. on whose efforts are to obtain funding for the support for the Foundation’s activities and programs. The mission of the Psi Lambda Educational Foundation is to support the local chapter to promote and uplift the education of youth and the advancement of community through various philanthropic interest and activities throughout the Chattanooga Metro Area.


Psi Lambda Educational Foundation was organized in April 2002 as a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Charitable Organization.  The Foundation is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors.  The mission of the Psi Lambda Educational Foundation is to promote and uplift the education of youth and the advancement of community within the Chattanooga region.

Help us support the ongoing efforts of Psi Lambda Chapter and Alpha Phi Alpha to develop and implement educational programs and opportunities for local high school graduates of Chattanooga. Your gift can help to fund these programs for this year and beyond.


You can make a gift to ongoing operations or toward the endowment of the Foundation. Your gift can be directed to a specific program or added to the general fund, as you see fit using the Make a Gift form.


We invite you to tailor your giving as you see fit by selecting one of several options.

Unrestricted gifts – allow the Foundation to allocate funds wherever the need is greatest, and to take advantage of unique opportunities as they arise. Your unrestricted gift will be used to support costs associated with the annual scholarship awards, YMOD (Young Men of Distinction) Project Alpha , and other board approved local programs of 501C3 Organizations.

Restricted gifts – can be targeted to specific programs such as Scholarships, or the Alpha Achievers. When you make a restricted gift to the Foundation, you enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you are supporting a program that is personally meaningful to you.

Endowment gifts – You also have the option of designating your gift specifically for the Foundation endowment. Building the endowment is part of the Foundation’s long-term strategy to move towards complete self-sufficiency.


Mail – gifts can be mailed directly to the Foundation at PO Box 334 Chattanooga, TN 37401. Gifts can be of cash, or personal checks, company checks, cashier’s checks, or money orders made payable to Psi Lambda Educational Foundation, Inc. You can specify that your gift is restricted/unrestricted or for the general fund/endowment.

Paypal – Donations may be made virtually via Paypal. When making such a gift, indicate in the Comment space provided how you want the money applied.

Endowment – Gifts intended only for the endowment can also be made by check or money order payable to Psi Lambda Educational Foundation, Inc. In the Memo section of your check or money order, simply specify that the gift is for Psi Lambda Educational Foundation, Inc.

Such programs typically match all or a percentage of employee contributions to charitable organizations, making the employer a partner in employees’ personal philanthropy.
